Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024

Context:

Recently, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying released the annual publication of ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024’.

These Statistics were released on the occasion of National Milk Day.

  • National Milk Day has been observed annually on November 26 since 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien.

Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2024

  • This survey generates crucial data on the production estimates of Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as Milk, Eggs, Meat, and Wool, which is helpful in policy formulation in the livestock sector.
  • This survey is based on the results of the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) which is conducted across the country in three seasons, Summer (March-June), Rainy (July-October) and Winter (November-February). 
  • India has the largest population of livestock globally. 
  • The livestock sector contributed 5.50% to the total GVA in 2022-23. 

Milk Production:

  • India ranks first in the world’s total milk production with 239.30 million tonnes.
  • The average milk availability of milk is 471 grams per day.
  • The milk production from exotic cattle has increased by 8% whereas indigenous/non-descript cattle has increased by 44.76% in 2023-24 as compared to the previous year.

Top three milk producing States:

  • Uttar Pradesh: 16.21%
  • Rajasthan: 14.51% 
  • Madhya Pradesh: 8.91%

Egg Production:

  • India ranks second in the world in total egg production with 142.77 billion after China.
  • Egg production has increased by 3.17% in 2023-24 as compared to the previous year.
  • The per capita availability of eggs is 103 eggs per annum.

The top three egg-producing states are

  • Andhra Pradesh: 17.85%
  • Tamil Nadu: 15.64%
  • Telangana: 12.87% 

Meat Production:

  • India ranks fifth in the world in terms of total meat production with 10.25 million tonnes of production after China, USA, Brazil and Russia.
  • The meat production has increased by 4.95% in 2023-24 as compared to the previous year.

Top three meet-producing states

  • West Bengal: 12.62%
  • Uttar Pradesh: 12.29%
  • Maharashtra: 11.28%  

Wool Production

  • The total wool production in the country is 33.69 million kgs in 2023-24.
  • Wool production has increased by 0.22% as compared to the previous year.

The top three Wool production states are

  • Rajasthan: 45.94%
  • Jammu and Kashmir: 25.24%
  • Gujarat: 7.08%
