Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026

SYLLABUS

GS-3: Science and Technology- developments and their applications and effects in everyday life.

Context: The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Henri B. Kagan (France) and Kenso Soai (Japan) for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

Key Discovery of Nobel Laureates 2026

• Henri B. Kagan – Non-linear effects: In 1986, Kagan challenged the assumption that the chirality of a catalyst would be transferred proportionally to the product.

  • When left- and right-handed molecules combine with a metal ion in a catalyst, three combinations can form: left-left, right-right and left-right.
  • Kagan found that the left-right combination reacted much more slowly than the other two.
  • Therefore, even when both forms were present, the more efficient catalyst could dominate the reaction and produce a much greater excess of one mirror-image molecule than the initial imbalance in the catalyst.
  • This phenomenon became known as a non-linear effect.

• Kenso Soai – Autocatalysis: Soai built on Kagan’s discovery and explored whether the catalyst could form itself during the reaction.

  • In 1995, he demonstrated an asymmetric autocatalytic reaction in which starting with a 2% excess of one enantiomer resulted in an 87% excess.
  • He continued his experiments and, in 2003, achieved a reaction in which an excess of one enantiomer formed and then created copies of itself.
  • A tiny initial imbalance could therefore be strongly amplified, with one enantiomer ultimately comprising more than 99.5% of the product.
  • This provided a chemical mechanism for how homochirality can emerge.

About the Nobel Prize

• The Nobel Prizes were established through the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor, scientist and entrepreneur.

• In his 1895 will, Nobel directed that his fortune should be used to reward those who had conferred the “greatest benefit to humankind.”

• The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901.

• Nobel originally specified five prize categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace.

• The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was established in 1968 and is administered within the Nobel Prize system, although it was not one of the prizes specified in Nobel’s original will.

• The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

• The Nobel Prizes are officially handed out on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

• The term Nobel laureate comes from the ancient Greek tradition of awarding laurel wreaths to victors as a sign of honor.
