Indian Prime Minister's Visit to Jordan

SYLLABUS

GS-2: Bilateral, Regional and Global Groupings and Agreements involving India and/or affecting India’s interests.

Context: Recently, the Prime Minister of India undertook an official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, to strengthen bilateral relations.

More on the News

• This full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan is taking place after a span of 37 years, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 

• India and Jordan have signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas such as renewable energy, water resources, digital transformation and cultural heritage, with Amman (Capital of Jordan) expressing its intent to join key Indian-led global initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

• India has also announced its support for the India-Jordan Centre of Excellence set up at the Al Hussein Technical University in Amman, which includes the training of 10 Master Trainers over a period of three years.

• Along with Jordan, the Prime Minister of India, also visited Ethiopia and Oman as part of a three-nation tour from December 15–18, 2025. 

India-Jordan Relations

• Political Engagement: Year 2025 marks a major milestone, celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations and deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.

• Economic ties: Currently, India is the third-largest trading partner of Jordan. In the financial year 2023–24, total India-Jordan trade reached US$ 2.875 billion, with India’s exports to Jordan amounting to US$ 1.465 billion.                

• Security Cooperation: Both countries share concerns and agreed to deepen cooperation in Counter terrorism and regional stability (including developments in Gaza and West Asia).

• People-to-people ties: Jordan is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people employed across sectors such as textiles, construction, and manufacturing.

• Science & Technology: The Indian-Jordan Center of Excellence in Information Technology (IJCOEIT), a next-generation IT facility at Al-Hussein Technical University (HTU), was inaugurated on 02 October 2021.
