Melye-Amiley 

Context:

A recent study published in the journal ‘Food Frontiers’ by the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) revealed that ‘Melye-Amiley’ has anti-obesity effects. 

About Melye-Amiley 

  • It is the extract from a traditional fermented bamboo shoot variety of Tripura. 
  • It reduces intracellular lipid accumulation and increases fatty acid β-oxidation.
  • The process of fermentation involved an increase in the expression of lipolytic and fat browning regulator genes (UCP1, PRDM16, and PGC1-alpha).
  • The treatment with Melye-amiley leads to the upregulation of thermogenic protein expression.

Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) 

  • It was initially conceived and nurtured by the Assam Science Society and was inaugurated by Noble Laureate Dorothy C. Hodgkin in 1979. 
  • The institute was taken over in 2009 by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, as one of its autonomous R&D Institutes.
  • The Institute is engaged in multidisciplinary research activities, both in fundamental and applied, across frontier areas of science and technology such as Plasma Physics, Polymer Sciences, Biochemistry, Drug Design & Development, Nano-science, etc. 

10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games 2024

Context:

Recently, Malaysia hosted the 10th edition of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games.

  • India participated in the tournament with a 68-member team, which included 42 men and 26 women.
  • India bagged 8 gold, 18 silver, and 29 bronze medals and finished in the 5th position among the 21 countries.
  • Games contain the following 9 sports: Athletics, Badminton, Bowling, Chess, Football, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Wrestling.

Asia Pacific Deaf Game 

  • Asia Pacific Deaf Games was established in 1984 and held every 4 years in the Asia Pacific region. India never hosted the games.
  • Asia Pacific Deaf Games is held under the purview of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD).

International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) 

  • The ICSD is an independent and self-regulated international sports organization established in 1924.
  • The ICSD is not involved with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
  • In 1966, the ICSD was awarded the Olympic Cup by the IOC for its accomplishments in the area of International Deaf Sports.

Subramania Bharati 

Context:

Recently, the Prime Minister of India released the compendium of complete works of great Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati.

Subramania Bharati 

He was born in Ettayapuram of the then Tirunelveli district (presently Tuticorin district) on 11 December 1882.

He was an Indian writer, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist, and social reformer from Tamil Nadu, India. 

He is considered the initiator of modern Tamil literature.

He was popularly known as "Mahakavi Bharatiyar",

Bharati joined as Assistant Editor of the Swadeshamitran, a Tamil daily in 1904.

He started editing the Tamil Weekly ‘India’ and the English newspaper ‘Bala Bharatham’ in 1907.

He was also an active member of the Indian National Congress. 

Bharati participated in the historic Surat Congress in 1907.

His weekly journal India and Vijaya (a daily Tamil newspaper) were banned in British India in 1909.

Bharati assisted Aurobindo in the Arya journal and later Karma Yogi in Pondicherry.

  • Bharati lived in Pondicherry for a while to avoid the arrest and punishment of the British.

He died on 11th September 1921, months after the incident where he was struck by an elephant.

The house was bought and renovated by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1993 and named Bharatiyar Illam (Home of Bharatiar).

Bharati’s Works

  • Three of his greatest works namely, Kuyil Pattu, Panchali Sabatham, and Kannan Pattu were composed in 1912.
  • He also translated Vedic hymns, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, and Bhagavat Gita into Tamil.
