Recently, the 53rd annual Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting was held in Tonga, bringing together leaders from the 18 member nations of the PIF along with their dialogue partners.

• Pacific Islands face severe climate impacts, with sea levels rising more than double the global average. 
• The leaders endorsed the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) to streamline climate financing for adaptation and disaster response. 
• UN Secretary-General urged action as the PRF is $380 million short of its $500 million goal.

Geopolitical Rivalry and Regional Initiatives: 

• The meeting highlights the intense competition between China, the US, and other Western nations for influence in the Pacific. 
• The proposed $270 million Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI) by Australia aims to includes a central police hub in Brisbane, four regional training centers, and a new multinational force to address regional emergencies, drug trafficking, and other major issues.

• Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI): Aims to strengthen maritime security, ecological sustainability, resource management, capacity building, disaster risk reduction, scientific cooperation, and regional connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region.
• Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC): Established in 2014, this platform facilitates collaboration between India and 14 Pacific Island nations. 
• India-UN Development Partnership Fund: Supports projects such as Parametric Microinsurance in Fiji, water cisterns in Tuvalu, and solarisation of Tonga’s National Council for Women.
• Quick Impact Projects: India will fund Quick Impact Projects worth USD 50,000 in each of the 14 Pacific Island countries, inviting proposals to drive impactful development.
