Assam Cabinet approves rule that makes Muslim marriage registration compulsory

The Assam Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday approved a rule that makes the registration of Muslim marriages compulsory.

The Assam Muslim Mar-riage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026, opera-tionalise the registration framework under the As-sam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 2024, which replaced a piece of legislation enacted in 1935.
