Bill to rename

Kerala as Keralam

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed a Bill to change the name of Kerala to Keralam, just over two years after the state Assembly passed a unanimous resolution, asking the Centre for the name change.

The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which changes the name of the state to Keralam and makes the necessary amendments to the Constitution, including in the First Schedule, was passed by a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had passed the Bill on Tuesday.

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the National Cooperative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which expands the role of the NCDC to giving loans and grants directly to cooperative societies.

July household inflation edges up to 4.45%

Prices for Indian house-holds rose 4.45% year-on-year in July, little changed from the 4.38% increase seen in June, al-though inflation for war-impacted categories remained elevated. According to data released Wednesday by the Ministry of Statistics and Pro-gramme Implementation, food inflation rose in the country to 5.52% last month from 5.32% in June, while restaurants and cafes continued to charge diners higher prices.
