The United States said it expected an Iranian response as soon as later on Friday to its latest proposal to end the war in the Gulf, even as US and Iranian forces traded fire in the region and the United Arab Emirates came under renewed attack.

Terminating 28-wk pregnancy would pose serious risks to mother, AIIMS board tells HC

In a report submitted before the Delhi High Court on Friday, a medical board of AIIMS New Delhi advised against terminating a 28-week pregnancy marked by severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), maintaining that the procedure at this stage would pose serious risks to the mother.

Hybrid rose 'Tribhuvan' named after first plan panel secretary

India's first full-time secretary of Planning Commission and 1936-batch ICS officer Tribhuvan Prasad Singh, better known as TP Singh, has a new variety of rose named after him.

"Tribhuvan", as it is called, has been developed by South Asia's leading nursery and rose breeder, K S Gopalaswamiengar Son, popularly known as KSG Son, at Chamarajpet, Bengaluru, over four and a half years. Though named in 2025, the rose would be part of KSG roses catalogue 2027-28, and available for sale and exhibition only in 2027.

Semaglutide generics launch pushes sales of GLP-1 drugs by 75% in 1 month

The Market for diabetes and anti-obesity GLP-1 medicines has risen by over 75% in size since the launch of generic versions of semaglutide over a month ago, shows recently released pharmaceutical market data.

Total semaglutide sales have gone up from 25,000 units in February to 1.7 lakh units in April, driving the overall sales of GLP-1 medicine.

Great Nicobar project: Calcutta HC bench agrees to hear PILs against forest rights clearance

The Calcutta High Court's circuit bench at Port Blair has agreed to hear three public interest litigations by retired bureaucrat Meena Gupta who has challenged the key clearances and approvals to the Great Nicobar project. One of the PILs by Gupta, who was a Union government Secretary, challenges the validity of proceedings held under the Forest Rights Act-2006.

Why 2023 law to appoint CEC came about, the legal challenge it faces

The Supreme Court on Thursday described Parliament's decadeslong delay in enacting a law for appointments to the Election Commission, until it was directed to do so in 2023, as "tyranny of the elected".

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma was hearing challenges to the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. This law-introduced to address the legislative gap came under legal challenge in 2024 as it removed the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection panel for Election Commissioners, replacing the CJI with a Union Cabinet minister appointed by the Prime Minister.

As the conflict in West Asia continues to strangle fuel and fertiliser supplies across the world, pushing up prices and the cost of living, a familiar question has resurfaced: Who gets hurt the most?

Whether one talks about individuals or families or whole economies, the short answer is that there is a stark difference between how such a crisis affects the haves and the have-nots.

In other words, often such crises create a K-shaped economy. This is a phenomenon where the economic divisions and inequalities widen with one (often small) segment of the economy tending to consume heavily while another (often large) segment struggles to even consume the staples.

Digital access, cyber security challenges ecosystem: CEA in DPI

India's digital public infrastructure (DPI) has achieved world-class scale, but challenges relating to digital ac-cess, data governance, interoperability and cyber security remain areas of concern, Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said on Friday.

Addressing an ICRIER event on "Digital Public Infra-structure & Public Service De-livery", Nageswaran said large sections of the population, particularly the elderly, people living in areas with poor connectivity and those with low literacy and limited digital fluency, still face barriers in ac-cessing digital services.
