SC directs Centre to frame SOPs to curb 'digital arrest' scams

The Supreme Court on Tuesday passed a detailed order directing the Centre, States, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and telecom authorities to prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb "digital arrest" scams.

Kerala to put in place disaster resilience system: Satheesan

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced on Tuesday that Kerala will establish a state-of-the-art disaster resilience system in Pathanamthitta on a pilot basis to strengthen preparedness against recurring floods.

India needs to upgrade infrastructure, train coaches

One of the biggest impediments to India's aspiration to bid for the 2036 Olympics is the lack of enough world-class performers. For India, a prospective host, targeting a prestigious top-10 finish is a humongous task. In the 21st century, the country achieved its best-ever result of 48th with seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and was 71st with six medals at Paris 2024. India needs to win approximately 30 to 40 medals, including gold in double digits, to be in the elite club. To chase this Olympic dream, the Union Cabinet has approved an allocation of 29,054 crore an eight-fold increase - for the new phase of the Khelo India Scheme.

India currently has a large youth population. If unemployment rates, especially among those entering the labour market, remain high, the country risks frittering away its demographic dividend.

While the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommended a significant increase in spending on education, government expenditure on education as a share of the total budget has been declining consistently. The lack of funding creates a serious supply bottleneck for educational opportunities.

Parliament clears Bill on births, deaths registration

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 amid protests by Opposition members demanding an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the police action to against student protesters. The Bill proposes amend sub-section (3) of Section 13 of the present Act to make provisions of delayed registration more stringent.

'Six-in-one vaccine may boost immunisation programme'

Introducing the hexavalent (six-in-one) vaccine into India's Universal Immunisation Programme could improve the efficiency of childhood immunisation programme, according to a study conducted by the Union Health Ministry along with the George Institute for Global Health India; the Gates Foundation; Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; and John Snow India Private Limited.

10-km mining buffer applies to all wetland reserves: SC

The Supreme Court orally clarified on Tuesday that a direction banning mining activities within a 10-km radius of the Asan wetland conservation reserve, a Ramsar site in Uttarakhand, would apply to other wetland reserves across the country for the sake of parity.

3 widely used medicines classified as carcinogenic by WHO research agency

Three widely prescribed medicines used to treat high blood pressure, fun-gal infections, and organ transplant rejection have been classified as "carcinogenic to humans" (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization (WHO)'s cancer research agency.

India's private-sector research effort is now being driven overwhelmingly by the transportation, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and information technology (IT) industries, with transport companies emerging as the country's largest corporate R&D investors, according to the Department of Science and Technology's (DST) Research and Development Statistics 2025-26.

Govt. introduces Bill to 'make it easier to do business in India'

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday introduced the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, seeking to amend several existing Acts in a bid to attract more foreign capital, make it easier to do business in India, and to push the Make in India mission.

The Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 will amend the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, Income-Tax Act, 2025, and the Fi-nance Act, 2026.
