In the past year, the rupee has fallen 5.6 per cent, from 84.7 to 89.7, against the US dollar. It has fallen even more against the euro (9.4 per cent) and the British pound (14.3 per cent), besides also weakening against the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan over this period.

States have often expressed concern regarding their fiscal space being squeezed in recent years. There was a noticeable change that was brought about by the 14th Finance Commission in raising the share of states in the divisible pool of central taxes from 32 per cent to 42 per cent.

Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in November (for sales in October) stayed flat at Rs 1.70 lakh crore as against Rs 1.69 lakh crore last year. This comes after the sweeping rate cuts for over 375 items under GST 2.0 that became effective September 22. Including compensation cess, which was earlier counted as part of gross GST mop-up, the gross collections were down 4.0 per cent at Rs 1.75 lakh crore in November.
