Context:

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar-2025 in the Institutional Category.

Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar

• The award is announced annually on 23rd January, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. 
• The award recognizes and honours the invaluable contribution and selfless service rendered by individuals and organizations in India in the field of disaster management.
• The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 51 lakh and a certificate in the case of an institution and Rs. 5 lakh and a certificate in the case of an individual.

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS)

It was established as an autonomous body in 1999 (Hyderabad, Telangana) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences to specialize in early alerts for ocean-related hazards.

It provides round-the-clock monitoring and warning services for the coastal population on tsunamis, storm surges, high waves, etc. through the in-house Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC). 

• The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO designated ITEWC as a Regional Tsunami Service Provider (RTSP) to provide tsunami warnings to countries on the Indian Ocean Rim.

INCOIS has been designated as the 'National Oceanographic Data Centre' by IOC/IODE of UNESCO and is also identified as the 'Regional Argo Data Centre for the Indian Ocean'.

INCOIS is a permanent member of the Indian delegation to the IOC of UNESCO and a founding member of the Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System (IOGOOS) and the Partnership for Observing the Oceans (POGO).

National Conference on Good Governance

Context: 

Recently a two-day National Conference on Good Governance was held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

• The conference reaffirmed the Centre-State collaboration in scaling digital governance.
• The conference was organized by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat.
• DARPG comes under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. It has been established for public grievances relating to the states in general and those pertaining to Central Government agencies in particular.

Key highlights of the conference

• The presentation of 16 award-winning projects from the Government of India and 9 award-winning projects from Gujarat underscored the pioneering initiatives in smart governance infrastructure.
• TeCHO, a mobile and web-based application was also introduced for real-time data capture, automated alerts for high-risk cases, and beneficiary tracking.
• 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ (A biannual e-journal) was launched by DARPG. 
• A State Collaborative Initiative Portal was also announced by the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office. 

Lazium Folk dance

Context:

Lazium folk dance is in the news after the upcoming Bollywood movie scene controversy.

• Shrimant Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosle of Satara (direct descendent of the king) and political organization has objected to a Lezim dance sequence in the movie ‘Chava’ involving the warrior-king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Bhosale and Maharani Yesubai.

Lazium Folk dance:

• Lezim also called lazium or lezium is a folk dance from the state of Maharashtra that originated in 1986.
• It gets its name after a musical instrument- a unique wooden stick, with jingling cymbals attached to it that the dancers carry while performing the dance. 
• It is said that during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Lezim was a sport played by men to build their muscles. 
• Eventually, some of the community preserved this sport and started performing it as a dance performance. 
• The dancers wear a traditional costume which consists of a white kurta, pyjama and a colourful belt with a colourful turban.

World Cancer Day 2025

Context: 

World Cancer Day is observed annually on 4th February.

World Cancer Day 2025:

• It marks twenty-five years of signing the Charter of Paris Against Cancer at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millenium. 
• World Cancer Day was first observed in 2000.

About Cancer 

• Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020.
• Around one-third of deaths from cancer are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake, and lack of physical activity. 
• Cancer-causing infections, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis, are responsible for approximately 30% of cancer cases in low- and lower-middle-income countries.

Status of Cancer in India:

• On November 7th each year, India observes National Cancer Awareness Day (to honour the birth of Nobel Laureate Madame Marie Curie).
• India is experiencing a rapid rise in cancer cases in recent years.
• According to data from the National Cancer Registry Programme around 800,000 new cancer cases are expected each year, with tobacco-related cancers accounting for as much as 40–50% of all cancers in men and 20% in women.
