Amid high inflation, RBI retains repo rate at 6.5%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) held steadfast in its battle against inflation amid weakening growth momentum, with four of six members voting to keep policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50% for the 11th bimonthly review in a row. However, acknowledging that the economy is facing tight liquidity conditions that are likely to persist for a few months, it cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) for banks by 50 basis points to 4%, after a gap of two and half years, in a bid to support growth.

Vikram Misri to visit Dhaka on Monday as tensions mount

In India's first high-level diplomatic outreach to Bangladesh since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led regime, Foreign Secretary will visit Dhaka on December 9, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday. His visit is part of "structured interactions" with Bangladesh, MEA spokes- person Randhir Jaiswal said.

'No card, no work': MGNREGS deletions hit rural workers hard

The high rate of deletions has coincided with the government's push for the Aadhaar-Based Payment System (ABPS). In January 2023, the Ministry of Rural Development man- dated the nationwide implementation of ABPS for MGNREGS. To be eligible for ABPS, workers must meet conditions such as their Aadhaar must be linked to their job card, the name on the Aadhaar must match the name on the job card, and their bank account must be Aadhaar- seeded and mapped to the National Payments Corporation of India.

SC to hear plea to reduce water level at Mullaperiyar

The Supreme Court fixed in January a detailed hearing of a petition seeking to bring down the permissible water level of the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala from 142 ft to 120 ft to obviate the possibility of a dam breach.

The 25,000-strong Nicobarese population appears to have a significant ancestral connection with Austroasiatic populations across South and Southeast Asia and, they could have settled in the region only about 5,000 years ago, according to new genetic research by scientists from CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and others. –

While heavy rainfall during the northeast monsoon is common at this time of the year in Tamil Nadu, the State and the Union Territory of Puducherry did not expect Cyclone Fengal to cause such widespread devastation when it crossed the eastern coast on the night of November 30. On December 1, unusually heavy rainfall (40 cm to 50 cm) was recorded in many places in Puducherry and the northern and northwestern parts of Tamil Nadu. Among the coastal districts, Chennai was less affected.

Trump administration deserves a lot of credit for Quad, says Jaishankar

The Trump administration deserves a "lot of the credit" for the take-off of the Quad in its second iteration, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Friday. He said the U.S. Presidentelect's concerns on alliances and burden-sharing do not apply to the quadrilateral grouping as everyone contributes a "fair share". Mr. Jaishankar said the stand-off with China impacted the relationship between the two countries, and following the disengagement, there is a need for de-escalation because "there's still a very large number of forces" at the border areas.

Indira Gandhi Peace Prize to be conferred on Michelle Bachelet

The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2024 will be conferred on former Chilean President and prominent human rights voice Michelle Bachelet, a statement issued by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust said on Friday. The international jury for the award was chaired by former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon.

India has bagged the International Social Security Association's Good Practice Award for Asia and Pacific for this year for five services provided by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

No plans for de-dollarisation: Das

India has no plans for de-dollarisation, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said in response to a question on U.S. President- elect Donald Trump's threat to slap 100% tariffs on BRICS nations planning a common currency to challenge the hegemony of U.S. dollar in global trade.

RBI's MuleHunter to prevent digital fraud

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based MuleHunter AITM to prevent and mitigate digital frauds through the use of mule accounts.

Balance between growth and inflation is unsettled, says RBI Governor Das

The MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) is committed to restoring balance between inflation and growth, which has got unsettled over the past few months. The RBI will use its various policy instruments to create the conditions for restoring the inflation growth balance. The credibility of the flexible inflation targeting framework needs to be reserved. Inflation has to be brought down in the interest of sustainable growth. Prudence, practicality and timing, will continue to be the guiding principles for the Reserve Bank's future actions. Timing of actions is the key.
