Cyclone set to cross coast; red alert in 16 A.P. districts

Cyclone Montha is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada on Tuesday evening or night as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. A red alert has been issued for 16 districts in the State on Tuesday.

A start for North-South carbon market cooperation

On September 17, 2025, the European Union (EU) and India set out a new comprehensive strategic agenda in their joint communication. Called the New Strategic EU-India Agenda, it primarily addresses five pillars on which their partnership will be enhanced: prosperity and sustainability; technology and innovation; security and defence; connectivity and global issues, and enablers across pillars. Buried in the section on clean transition is a critical line that the EU will link the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The race for global leadership in science

The Trump administration is recurrently cutting basic research funding and disrupting the U.S. science and technology (S&T) system as never before. More than 1,000 grants were terminated between January 20 and March 2025 at three government agencies. The National Cancer Institute funding is down by 31%; the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by 21%; the National Science Foundation by 9%; and even NASA was not spared. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, calls for a 56% cut to the current $9 billion NSF budget and a 73% reduction in staff and fellowships. The Environmental Protection Agency is being pruned drastically. Across the S&T system, about 4,000 research grants have been cancelled, according to Nature (June 25, 2025).

According to one report by UNESCO, India has topped the list of countries with the maximum number of dialects on the verge of extinction. According to D.G Rao, former Director of the Central Institute of Languages, India has lost over 220 languages in the last 50 years.

The Supreme Court on Monday orally mooted tasking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with probing the menace of "digital arrests" orchestrated by fraudsters posing as judges and police officers using forged documents.

MeitY announces investments in TN, AP, MP for ₹5,532 cr.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Monday announced seven projects amounting to 5,532 crore, five of which are in Tamil Nadu, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, in the electronics component manufacturing space.
